Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
